I can hardly count the number of times someone has come to me perplexed because they work out so hard and just don’t see results in the mirror. They are usually discouraged and frustrated that their efforts don’t seem to show on the outside. My answer is always the same question –
“What does your diet look like?”
It takes minimal effort to show up at the gym, follow instructions, lift some things, put them down, bend, pull and squat. Don’t get me wrong; I am not minimizing the value or the exertion that we all put in to the work we do in the gym. It’s tough, sometimes brutal and we have to push ourselves to stay out of our comfort zones. Luckily we only have to do this for an hour or less a day.
Being mindful of what you are feeding your body for all the other hours in the day takes a tremendous amount of effort. We are bombarded with temptations for unhealthy foods constantly: the kid’s sugary cereal, the sugar-laden designer coffees, fast-food, $5 lunch deals, office pot-lucks, vending machines…it just doesn’t stop!
If you want to see the results that you’re working so hard for in the gym, you have to work just as hard on your nutrition. Take a look at what you’re putting on your plate and ask yourself these questions:
- Where’s the protein?
- Where are the veggies?
- Do I need carbs?
- Do I have some healthy fat?
If you’re struggling to see the results you want, all you have to change is what goes on your plate. Don’t worry; just like with the movements we do in the gym, you will improve with practice. It’s only a matter of time before you are RXing all your meals!
