Our current strength-cycle is predicated on breaking records! Too often people chase ‘unicorn records’ of 20+ pound jumps in 5-, 3-, or 1-rep maxes at a time. This is NOT how true progress is built. True progress is built by adding 2.5-5lbs to the barbell each session. That is it! Making small, CONSISTENT wins over a lifetime in weight lifting is the real ‘secret’ to success. It is for this reason that I recommend everyone maintain a logbook. A logbook can be as simple as a 10-cent spiral notebook to record the weights and feelings you had from a training session. Then, when a coach is covering the workout at the start of the class, you have a historical record to recall in terms of trying to beat old rep-max records by 2.5-5lbs at a time. Always strive to make consistent progress forward in little ways each session.
